How to Publish a Book: To Self Publish Your Book, or Not to Self Publish Your Book

How to Publish a Book Readers,

This week at How to Publish a Book, we have a video from last month's panel discussion at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh on the topic of Self Publishing, titled "To Self Publish Your Book, or Not to Self Publish Your Book." The panelists include Adam Shepard and Elisa Lorello.

Since self publishing his memoir Scratch Beginnings, Adam Shepard has been on the Today Show, 20/20, the Glen Beck Program, and has been featured in the Christian Science Monitor, the New York Post and countless other media outlets. Subsequently, his self-published book found a home at a major publishing house (Harper-Collins) and gained him representation from a well-respected literary agency, Trident Media Group.

Elisa Lorello's debut novel Faking It was self published through Lulu.com. Like many of us, Elisa started by trying to find a literary agent and so-called "traditional" publisher for Faking It before deciding to self publish her novel. A true self-starter, Ms. Lorello has developed an online following through her blog Kairos Calling, her Facebook Fan Page for Faking It, and through speaking at bookstore events in our area. She teaches writing at NC State University.

This discussion touches on a topic that is at the heart of many of us regarding how to publish a book... that is, what are you supposed to do with your book when it's done?

Elisa and Adam represent two very different types of authors and two very different levels of success. Hopefully, in their differences, they represent a broad spectrum and you may find some connection to one or both of them.

Enjoy the discussion, and as always, thanks for visiting us here at How to Publish a Book.

How to Publish a Book: Literary Agent and The Write Stuff TV Show

How to Publish a Book Readers,

Well, the past three weeks have been remarkable. I signed with literary agent Irene Webb about three weeks ago, and yesterday I received a phone call from Cyrus Webb, producer of a new reality television show called The Write Stuff that I have been selected as a contestant.

The Write Stuff is slated to be broadcast on select CW Network affiliates to more than 20 million households in the United States. Here is my audition video:

Needless to say, I am going to be as busy the next two months as I've ever been. The taping for The Write Stuff TV show is going to take up a significant amount of time, and other projects are going to have to go on hold or I'll have to find replacements.

Two of our themes here at How to Publish a Book are: 1) Get a literary agent, and 2) Gain as much exposure for your writing as you can. While I've spent years getting to this point, to have both of these breakthroughs in the span of a few weeks is very exciting.

Currently, I'm on vacation in Orlando, Florida, and the weather has been nothing short of perfect. Next week, it's back to work. I'll be sure to keep y'all updated on both the literary agent (and possible novel sale) and the new TV show in the next few weeks.

Thanks for visiting us here at How to Publish a Book.
